Gemeinsam für die europäische Sache
Letzte Woche waren unsere Freunde von MitOst zu Gast bei uns im Turm. Zusammen mit Liquid Democracy leiten sie den Ideen-Wettbewerb "Advocate Europe – Gemeinsam für Europa" der von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert wird.
Hierbei unterstützen sie junge zivilgesellschaftliche Projekte und Organisationen, die sich für den Erhalt des demokratischen Gedankens in Europa einsetzen und diesen durch praktische Ansätze konkret weiterentwickeln. Das eine solche Thematik zurzeit umso wichtiger ist, zeigen die aktuellen öffentlichen Debatten über zunehmend nationales Denken und das Desinteresse der Bürgerinnen und Bürger an Europa.
Ziel des Treffens ist es durch die fachliche Einschätzung einer Expertenjury unkonventionelle, transnationale Projektideen zivilgesellschaftlicher Akteure, die zu einer Stärkung des Zusammenhalts in Europa beitragen auszuwählen und finanziell zu unterstützen. Insgesamt wurden 475 Ideen der Zivilgesellschaft aus 42 europäischen Ländern eingereicht. Die 31 Ideen der Shortlist wurden am 12. Juni einer Expertenjury in Oberhausen vorgelegt, die bis zu zwölf als Gewinner auswählt. Sie werden im Juli verkündet und erhalten jeweils bis zu 50.000 Euro Anschubfinanzierung sowie Beratung für ihr Projekt.
Thematiken wie politische Bildung, Austausch von Erfahrungen und Ideen, Partizipation und Demokratie, innovative Formen der Themenanwaltschaft, soziale Innovation sowie Kunst und Kultur spiegeln sich in den Konzepten der teilnehmenden Projekte wieder.
So beschäftigten sich die Projekte auf der diesjährigen Shortlist zum Beispiel mit Frauenrechten oder Steuerpolitik, mit dem Umgang von Fake-News oder dem Ausprobieren von Bürgerversammlungen. Die Projektemacher wollen neue Wahlmechanismen entwickeln, eine paneuropäische Initiative zur Europawahl 2019 starten und Gemeinschaftswährungen testen.
Als ehemalige Preisträger von Advocate Europe durften wir das Team und die Jury-Mitglieder für 2 Tage bei uns im Turm begrüßen.
Wir wurden vor 3 Jahren für unser Projekt „Refugees for Co-Creative Cities“ ausgewählt und stehen seitdem als Alumni in engem Kontakt mit den Initiatoren.
Das Treffen glich hierbei vielmehr einem Wiedersehen unter Freunden als einem offiziellen Meeting.
Die Jurymitglieder kamen aus aller Welt ins beschauliche Oberhausen um sich mit den Projekten zu beschäftigen. So hatten wir am Abend vor dem tatsächlichen Arbeits-Meeting ein gemeinsames Dinner mit den internationalen Gästen unter anderem aus Berlin, Süd-Afrika, Slowenien, Polen und England.
Husam und sein Sohn Rami vom Team der Refugees Kitchen hatten für diesen Anlass ein wahres Gourmet Buffet zusammengestellt. Gemeinsam wurde gegessen und sich an vergangene Treffen erinnert. Gleichzeitig wurde viel diskutiert über die aktuellen Ereignisse und über Hoffnungen und Ängste bezüglich der Entwicklung Europas.
Nach diesem schon fast familiären Auftakt, wurde es am nächsten Tag umso arbeitsintensiver. Von Frühmorgens bis in den späten Nachmittag hinein wurde im 4ten Stock des Turms über die Wahl der Preisträger beraten. Die teilnehmenden Projekte waren zuvor auf der Shortlist auch online einzusehen. Nun sollten aus dieser Liste diejenigen Projekte ausgewählt werden, die nach Meinung der Jurymitglieder dem Gedanken eines demokratischen Europas am ehesten entsprachen.
United in the European cause
Last week our friends from MitOst have visited the water tower.
In co-operation with Liquid Democracy they form the project series "Advocates Europe - Together for Europe", which is supported by the Mercator Foundation.
They support projects and organizations out of the civil society, that are dealing with the democratic concept in Europe. The importance of such a topic is more than given nowadays shown by the current public debates about increasingly national thinking and the lack of interest of citizens in Europe.
The aim of the meeting is to select and financially support unconventional, transnational project ideas of civil society actors contributing to strengthening cohesion in Europe through the expert judgment of an jury. A total of 475 civil society ideas from 42 European countries were submitted. The 31 ideas of the shortlist were presented on June 12 to a panel of experts in Oberhausen, which selects up to twelve as winners. They will be announced in July and each receive up to 50,000 euros start-up funding and advice for their project.
Topics such as political education, exchange of people and ideas, participation and democracy, innovative forms of thematic advocacy, social innovation and art and culture are reflected in the concepts of the participating projects. The projects at this year's shortlist dealt with women's rights, tax policy, with fake news and the creation of community networks. The project makers want to develop new electoral mechanisms, launch a pan-European initiative for the European elections in 2019 and test community currencies.
As a former member of Advocate Europe, we welcomed the team and jury members to the tower for two days.
3 years ago we were selected as one of the projects for our concept "Refugees for Co-Creative Cities" and stayed in touch since then.
The meeting was more of a reunion among friends then an official meeting. The jury members came from all over the world to the small town of Oberhausen to discuss the listed projects. Together with our international guests from Berlin, South Africa, Slovenia, Poland and England we had a festive dinner on the evening before the actual work meeting.
Husam and his son Rami from the RefugeeKitchen team created a gourmet like buffet for us. Enjoying the good food we sat together to remember past events and discuss about current developments and expectations concerning Europe
After this almost informal start next days agenda was filled with an intensive consultation of the jury. From early morning until late in the afternoon, the choice of winners was discussed on the 4th floor of the tower. The participating projects were previously open for the public on an online shortlist. From this list it was the jury`s topic to choose the most appropriate projects to fulfill the idea of a democratic Europe.
Für einen Tapetenwechsel und eine Erfahrung der besonderen Art sorgte zwischendrin unser Mittagessen auf dem Museumsbahnsteig.
Wiederum kümmerten sich Husam und Rami um das leibliche Wohl unserer Gäste und bereiteten das Buffet direkt an der Bahnsteigkante vor. Das schöne Wetter, die angeregten Gespräche und die neugierigen Blicke der Bahnfahrer taten ihr Übriges zu dieser einzigartigen Erfahrung dazu.
Leider mussten wir uns am Ende des Tages von unseren alten Freunden und neuen Bekanntschaften verabschieden.
Wir hoffen die besondere Atmosphäre bei uns im Turm hat ihren Teil zur erfolgreichen Entscheidung der Jurymitglieder beigetragen und freuen uns auf ein baldiges Wiedersehen.
Die Gewinner werden demnächst auf der Website von advocate europe bekannt gegeben. Wir sind gespannt auf neue innovative Ideen um ein demokratisches Europa weiter voran zu treiben!

For a change of scenery and an experience of a special kind, the lunch took place at a unique location: the historical platform of Oberhausen station, the so-called Museumsbahnsteig.
Once again, Husam and Rami took care of our well-being and prepared the buffet right at the edge of the platform. The beautiful weather, the lively conversations and the curious looks of the train drivers created a matchless experience.
Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to our old and new friends at the end of the day.
We hope the special atmosphere in the tower has contributed to the successful decision-making by the jury members and we look forward to see the Advocate Europe group again soon!
