Tandem Ost [2012]

Was da wohl drinsteht?

Together with the ukrainian organisations Totem and Theatre Centre Meyerhold and Hungarian Centre for contemporary Architecture KEK kitev forms a Tandem partnership from 2011 on.

The project „Tandem“, which was developed by the European Cultural Foundation and MitOst and is carried out together with Centre for Cultural Management Lviv, Soros Foundation Moldova and Culture Action Europe, is aimed at building new and long-term collaborative relations between select organisations from European Union countries and cultural key players from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

Our cooperation is based on two paths: one is the common development of a cultural space in Kherson, the other one is the ongoing collaboration of artistic work circling around the questions of public and private, collective and individual, the confrontation of different visions, the questioning of oneselfs artistic and social practice. The long term cooperation will be based on the exchange of experience and using methods of artistic research and

The project starts with a research phase- exploration of the cities and regions in search of stories, myths and rumours, collection of material through interviews, filming, audiorecording, collection of objects. Then follows the artistic transformation of this material. The later could be: documentary theatre performance with objects, audio and videoparts, guided tours to overlooked spaces in the town, with real and fake stories, audioinstallations in public space, tours with headphones, slight and light shows/installations, public singing event, performances in empty buildings, private flats, hotels, in marshrutkas, at the river, on boats.

Some of these stories that fascinate us are for example the disappearance of the soviet military sailing ship "Towarish" from Kherson. It appeared again in Germany, being the "Ex Gorch Fock" now. In general we like stories from the harbour, trade, shipbuilding (in the Ruhrarea one can find the biggest inland harbour of Europe). Another one is the symbolic "message in a bottle" we found in Kherson: a letter behind a plate of the former shoefactory written by socialists/communists in 1917 to their comrades in 2o17. What did it say? Let´s imagine…

In all the phases we invite different people to join, take part in order to deal with things from multiple perspectives.

In September our new collegues came to the Ruhrarea to get to know us, you and the area. One week full of activities and festivals: from "Schlimm City" and "Shiny Toys" in Mülheim to "Invisible Borders" in Bochum. Afterwards we went to Budapest: KEK was for us somehow a key to the city. We' ve met a lot of intersing initiatives and players on architecture, art and culture. We've started a fruitful work collaboration.
